Carol Upton (Fowlkes)

Carol Upton Fowlkes, nee Carol Eve Upton, passed away at age 67 on SEptember 27, 2020 following her bravely inspiring battle with breast cancer. Her three children Jenna, Daniel and Leanne were at her side. Treasured by many, Carol will be remembered for her inquisitive and analytical mind, and especially for her steadfast devotion to her loved ones.Carol spent the first decade of her life in Birmingham, Alabama before moving to Pittsburgh, PA. Her new Pennsylvania classmates quickly took notice of her southern accent. One day, her class assignment required her to deliver a soliloquy from Shakespeare's Macbeth, and she recited it in front of the whole class using an over-the-top redneck dialect. "Is this a dagger I see hurr b'fore me, the handle tuhward my hay-und?" This was met with wild laughter, and she faced no problem making lifelong friends at Baldwin High School. Carol treasured her time spent in Pittsburgh before moving to Kentucky to attend Georgetown College, where she played basketball on the school team and kept busy in many extra-curricular activities. She attended graduate school at the University of Louisville, earning her master's degree that allowed her to spend several years working in college admissions before she had her children. The pride Caerol felt for her children and grandchildren was wildly apparent to anyone she met. Even if they didn't fall victim to the many unsolicited photos of grandkids, they'd surely see the twinkle in her eyes when she mentioned them. Carol often touted that raising her three children was one of her crowning achievements. After those children grew up, Carol was blessed with 5 bright grandchildren, with whom she treasured every moment - whether reading bedtime stories or giving them their first taste of french fries. Carol primarily channeled her inquisitive nature through both religious and politiical study. Searching for purpose and explanation, she owned countless books exploring the matters through a United Methodist lens. She devoted her life to living the way she felt Christ called her to live. Just as voracious as her passion for religious study was her passion for politics, which she saw as a key way to take action in making our world better for others. She could talk for hours with her brother Phil about the latest new cycle. Though stalwart in her views, she valued one's heart more than one's opinion. Her children remember Carol sharing stories about secretly swapping opposing political yard signs on friends' lawns under the cover of night. Carol Upton Fowlkes lived her life with sincerity, and with a generous and loving nature, for which she will be deeply missed. Her family treasures every moment of our lives blessed by her presence, and we appreciate the impacts she had on so many. Carol was preceded in death by her father, Carey Upton. She is survived by her mother, Ruby Clevenger Upton, her 3 children: Jenna (married to Jason Smith), Daniel (married to Christina Fowlkes), and Leanne Fowlkes, her brother: Phil and Brad Upton, sisters-in-law Susie and Laura Upton, grandchildren: Jackson and Walker Smith, Whitman, Hensley, and Marshall Fowlkes, in addition to her beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Carol deeply loved them all.
